Free Attractions Tour
Visit some wonderful attractions in Orange County that are absolutely free. With its convenient Hudson Valley location, just one-hour north of New York City, it's also a gas saving bonus. And, there are numerous places to enjoy a picnic along the way.
Start with the National Purple Heart Hall of Honor (845-561-1765) on the grounds of the New Windsor Cantonment in Vails Gate. This newly opened interactive museum honoring recipients of the Purple Heart is a moving experience. The first badges of military merit were actually awarded on these grounds by General George Washington. The whole family will enjoy the costumed interpreters and demonstrations at the cantonment. Across the street is the Last Encampment of the Continental Army (845-561-5073) with replicas of military huts that housed Revolutionary War troops. This site also offers nature trails, an observation trail, and picnic facilities.
The Harness Racing Museum and Hall of Fame (845-294-6330) in Goshen has recently waived its general admission fees. This is a great opportunity to see riveting state-of-the-art and interactive exhibits that tell the history of America's first sport. There is truly something for everyone here from the largest collection of Currier & Ives trotting prints to a 3-D simulator that lets you drive a sulky to the finish line. Located right behind the museum is the Goshen Historic Track (845-294-5333). Visitors to the site can view horses in training almost everyday. There is a small fee for the grand circuit racing events that occur in June and July.
There are nine Karpeles Manuscript Library Museum (845-569-4997) sites across the nation, and Orange County is fortunate to have one of them in Newburgh. Visit changing exhibits from the world's largest private holding of important original manuscripts and documents. The archives include documents on literature, science, religion, history and art. Just down the street, take a stroll along the river walk at the Newburgh Waterfront. In addition to the beautiful scenery, there are seasonal music and art events held here.
You can spend hours viewing the galleries at West Point Museum (845-4938-3590). Situated in a beautiful building behind the West Point Visitors Center (845-938-2638) in Highland Falls are a wide range of exhibits on history and art relating to the United States Military Academy Corps of Cadets, US Army and the History of Warfare dating back to Egyptian times.
The Sterling Forest State Park Information Center (845-351-5907), a beautiful lodge-style building with nature and history exhibits and a huge diorama of the 7,000-acre park, will motivate you to get out on the trails. Free organized hikes and fascinating lectures by park educators will keep you coming back time after time.
Don't forget the many state and county parks that offer scenic vistas and a great place to have a picnic. Fun in Orange County doesn't have to cost a lot of money, and if you visit the attractions listed here, it doesn't have to cost anything at all!
